Consider what happens when you experience mental stress. Most people feel it in their neck and shoulders. As the stress increases, so does the height of their shoulders! I think of what happens to me when I'm getting dental work done. If the dentist is drilling, my shoulders are real high! The muscles connecting their head, neck, and shoulders tighten up and in just a little while, trigger points can develop.
For people that have lots of mental or emotional stress, over the course of days and months, the length of their muscles can actually become shorter. The physical makeup of their muscles changes. Muscles that were once healthy and elastic become fibrotic and painful. As the muscles tighten, the bones that they are attached to get pulled closer together. This clamping down of the joints in the long run causes joint problems including some forms of arthritis. In the spine, this is known as the vertebral subluxation complex. Such a problem goes beyond stiff joints and involves the nerves that exit the spine. Some people think they have a "pinched nerve" when in reality they have a stress induced vertebral subluxation complex.
To get stress relief, dealing with the problem can be quite simple. You just need to handle the problem on both ends dealing with both the cause and effect. That is, decrease the mental or emotional stress and treat the physical effects of it. If you can't decrease the mental aspect of the problem, you will have to forever manage the physical effects of your stress. Here is a short list of treatment options for your stored up stress:
1. Chiropractic - to reduce the vertebral subluxation complex. This is probably the fastest way to decrease nerve pressure and restore function in the spine. 2. Massage Therapy - to work out trigger points and spasms and help release the stress chemicals stored in the muscles. 3. Hydration - drinking plenty of water helps in this detoxification process as stress chemicals are released from your muscles into your blood stream. 4. Range of motion exercises - to increase circulation, help carry away toxins, and warm up the muscles prior to stretching. 5. Flexibility exercises - stretching helps to lengthen muscles and un-clamp joints. 6. Mental relaxation - Learning to let go of the mental stress and stop adding to the physical stress is an important part of gaining ground in what can otherwise be a vicious cycle. Whatever is excellent and pleasing, think about such things.
