Lower Back Pain

Low back pain is the second most common reason people go to see a doctor in the United States. Only the common cold causes more people to seek a physician. However, low back pain wins the prize for being the number one reason people miss work in the United States and is also the number one cause of job disability.

Causes of Low Back Pain

There are many causes of low back pain including auto accidents, arthritis, fractures, herniated discs, muscle spasms, overuse injuries, kidney stones, scoliosis, sports injuries, sprains, and even nutritional causes. But most chronic low back problems are associated with accelerated age related changes that are somewhat preventable and even reversable to some extent.
Chronic low back conditions usually start with an overall lack of spinal flexibility. Spinal joint loose more and more function becoming somewhat stuck or "fixated". Eventually, due to lack of normal function, one or more discs in the spine begins to break down and become dehydrated. When seen on MRI, this is referred to as disc dessication. The disc might further deteriorate and eventually bulge, herniate, or rupture. Eventually, over the course of years, arthritic changes to the bone become evident as bones begin to change shape forming rough edges and ridges called osteoarthritis, degeneration, and spur formation. If the process is left to continue, the arthritic changes can even cause one or more segments to fuse together permanently loosing mobility.

Treating Chronic Low Back Pain

When low back pain is caused by the degenerating mechanism as described above, the best treatment includes reversing the accelerated age related changes. This includes gradually implementing an exercise program to increase the function and range of motion of the spine. Chiropractic treatments are beneficial to release the spinal fixations allowing the exercises to be more effective. The prescribed range of motion exercises are designed to increase the circulation to the discs and surrounding tissues and lengthen the shortened muscles and ligaments. This helps improve segmental and overal spinal range of motion. A better moving less tight spine is less compressed and usually hurts less.

Preventing Low Back Pain

Keeping your spine healthy is key. Since most chronic low back conditions invovle a lack of flexibility and lack of function, maintaining a youthful flexibility is the key to the prevention of chronic low back pain. In the animal kingdom, this process comes quite naturally. If you have ever owned a cat or dog, you may have noticed that after every period of inactivity, your pet probably preceeded getting up with a good spinal stretch. They tend to bend there spines forward and backward and then sometimes throw in a wiggle or two. This flushing out of the inactivity and tension is the key to maintaining spinal function and preventing chronic low back conditions.

Because people tend to be task oriented, often their schedules rule over their natural stretching instinct. To make up for the years of not stretching daily, people need to gradually implement a proper strengthening and flexibility program for their spines. This is best done under the care of a chiropractor. Chiropractors are experts in the degenerating conditions of the spine. Your chiropractor can also check your spine to make sure that all segments of your spine are functioning within normal limits and rule out the presence of a vertebral subluxation complex.
